A conversation can stay small
One thought is enough to begin a conversation.
A conversation can start with a question about a piece of work, something that made you curious, or an idea you cannot quite name yet. It does not need to become a group, a commitment, or a public account of your life.
Before inviting somebody else, say what you are inviting them into. Is this a brief exchange, a reading, a collaboration, or simply company? Name what is optional and leave room for a different answer.
No answer leaves the invitation unanswered. It does not mean agreement, rejection of the person, or permission to find another way around the silence. Necessary work can have an explicit handoff without making a private explanation the price of leaving.
